Pensioner's hip broken during handbag snatch
A WOMAN underwent emergency surgery in hospital yesterday after she broke her hip during a handbag snatch.
The 67-year-old victim was on her way to a car park in the centre of Dublin when her bag was snatched. The terrified woman stumbled during the incident and fell heavily on the ground while the thief made off with her bag.
Her 77-year-old husband was not injured during the incident, which took place at the entrance to the Setanta car park in Drury Street shortly before 10pm on Wednesday.
The couple were on a night out and were on their way back to collect their car after a visit to the Gaiety theatre. They believe the thief followed them from Grafton Street. The woman sustained a serious hip break and is expected to remain in hospital for about eight weeks.
Last night gardai issued an appeal for help in tracking down the thief, who was described as in his late teens to early 20s, 5ft 5in to 5ft 8in tall, wearing dark clothes and white runners.
