Pensioner tortured and killed finally laid to rest

THE body of a pensioner who died following a brutal assault two months ago was carried yesterday on his beloved vintage tractor to his final resting place.

Johnny Golden died on October 6 last but his funeral was delayed until yesterday because further tests had to be carried out on his mutilated body.

The 73-year-old was attacked in his home at Doogary, near Killeshandra, Co Cavan, on September 7 and died a month later having never regained consciousness.

Yesterday more than 1,000 mourners lined the rural country roads to Killegar Parish Church for his funeral service.

Two kilometres from the church, his remains were removed from the hearse and placed on his beloved 1951 vintage Ferguson TVO and a lone piper led the cortege for the final leg of a long, sad journey.

Tractors from dozens of vintage clubs followed, while club members formed a guard of honour at the church.

Neighbour Seamus Galligan, who lives with his family less than 100 metres from the victim's home, found him semi-naked in a pool of blood on his bedroom floor.

It was only later it emerged that the victim had been subjected to a violent assault in which a poker and pliers are believed to have been used.

A 17-year-old was arrested four days later and detained for questioning for 24 hours at Ballyconnell garda station. He was later released without charge. An extensive investigation is ongoing.

Humble

Cavan County Councillor Maura Maguire Lynch, who was a childhood friend of the victim's, said that the funeral was a fitting tribute to a popular, humble man.

"The community has been absolutely devastated by his death. He was so well-known and well liked and I think the turn-out reflected that.

"People were there from the length and breadth of Ireland. It was what he deserved," she said.

Another close friend, Sue Kilbracken, said he was thought highly of by everyone who knew him.
