Pensioner thanks 'batman' good samaritan who saved handbag from thief

Know anyone who was in Clondalkin last Tuesday? They could be Barbara's good samaritan.

A 71-year-old woman wishes to thank the mysterious good samaritan who confronted a man trying to steal her handbag by driving up behind him after he attempted to get away.

On Tuesday last week, pensioner Barbara felt a tug on her handbag when a man in a black overcoat tried to steal it. He eventually overpowered her and took off with her belongings.

At the same time, a black car swung across the road and trailed him down the road. Not long after, the thief flung the handbag into the middle of the road, where Barbara was able to get it back without anything lost. The thief escaped without prosecution.

Barbara didn't get the chance to thank her hero, as he or she drove off after the bag was retrieved, but she wants to make sure her gratitude is known.

"I owe him a debt," the elderly lady said on RTE Radio this afternoon.

"I was very shook. There were a lot of people around, but they appeared to ignore it, except the mystery driver."

"He might have said it to somebody. [He's] exactly like batman and he took a considerable risk." she said.

"I'm a driver and I wouldn't be able to do it."

Barbara's only loss during the incident was a jar of peanut butter, which fell out of her shopping bag and into a gutter when she dropped her shopping to confront the thief.
