Pensioner killed in tractor tragedy

AN 86-year-old man was killed after being struck by a tractor in a town centre yesterday.

He had just parked his car in the centre of Athlone, Co Westmeath, and was walking along a road near the eastern approach to the River Shannon bridge when the accident happened shortly after 3.15pm. The man, who is from Athlone, was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim, who has not been formally identified by gardai, is survived by his wife and son.
