Mother-of-six Rose Douglas (pictured), who is in her 70s, had been out collecting fundraising money boxes and was returning to her home when she was struck by a car shortly after 11am at North Road, Finglas in Dublin.

The tragedy happened as she was about to cross the road not far from her home at Casement Road.

She was taken to the Mater Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

A technical examination of the scene was carried out by forensic collision investigators and gardai have appealed for witnesses.

Finglas priest Fr Michael Shiels described Rose as a great parish worker who organised the church altar and events in the Finglas west parish for 40 years.

"It's a terrible tragedy and the whole parish is devastated," he said.
