The community of Blennerville, near Tralee, Co Kerry, is still reeling after 67-year-old Jimmy Duffy -- a well-known character in the area -- perished in the blaze.

Investigators are probing a theory the blaze may have been started by a fire Mr Duffy had lit downstairs in the two-storey street-front house.

The alarm was raised after the fire was spotted at the single man's home at Church Road shortly after midday on Saturday.

Gardai are not treating it as suspicious.

It is believed Mr Duffy, who lived alone, died from smoke inhalation. A post mortem examination is being carried out at Kerry General Hospital.

Three units of the fire service attended the scene of the fire along with garda and ambulance services.
