Pensioner dies in cottage blaze
NEIGHBOURS had called into the home of a pensioner to check on her just hours before her rural cottage was engulfed in flames, writes Louise Hogan.
Bernie Cullen (67) died in the fire at her home, two miles outside the village of Windgap, near Callan in Co Kilkenny. The blaze at the rural cottage was spotted by a passerby at around 1pm, and two crews from Kilkenny Fire Brigade responded.
A forensic examination was being carried out at the house yesterday evening before Ms Cullen's remains were due to be removed to hospital.
Matt Doran, a first cousin of Ms Cullen, said it was early stages in the investigation but it was believed to be a "tragic accident".
Mr Doran, a councillor with Kilkenny County Council, said fire fighters had tried to enter the cottage but were unsuccessful. Ms Cullen was believed to have been in the bedroom. She has an adult son in the UK and he was being told last night.
