A MAN (72) died after suffering a heart attack on a train from Cork to Dublin. He fell ill shortly after boarding the train at Mallow with his wife.
Irish Rail said last night that the driver called for an ambulance as soon as he was notified of the man's distress and insisted that "the driver responded appropriately".
The emergency brake cord on the train was pulled by a number of passengers and the train stopped between stations near Charleville.
An Irish Rail spokesman said that it was "just over 30 minutes before the ambulance crew got to the train from the point that the train came to a halt".
He said the driver had difficulty restarting the train because there were multiple cords pulled and these all had to be reset.
