Peninsula revives Daisy Day tradition

Reviving an old peninsula tradition, Daisy Day is coming back to the Hook Lighthouse in Co Wexford on New Year's Day. Families are invited to the Lighthouse from 11.30am for a day of fun with a free 'Daisy Hunt' and games.

According to Niamh Waters of Hook Lighthouse, records show the old new year custom of 'penny for a daisy' was carried out by children on New Year's Day and large numbers of children collected the first flower and received pennies for them.

"All of the people on the Hook Peninsula would join in the hunt for daisies on New Year's Day, it was a very popular tradition and it very much brought the community together. The child who found the first daisy would win the hunt but lots of children would receive pennies from the families in the area," she said.

Hook Lighthouse is inviting everyone to come along on New Year's Day from noon to 4pm and join in the Daisy Hunt.
