Ireland's 60 years as a member of the UN will be celebrated by a new exhibition in Collins Barracks.

The exhibition, which highlights the efforts of the Defence Forces and An Garda Siochána on peacekeeping missions abroad, was opened by Defence Minister Simon Coveney and Equality Minister Aodhán Ó Ríordáin.

Both current and retired peacekeepers also attended.

Meanwhile, the LÉ Samuel Beckett rescued 99 people off the coast of Tripoli. The latest event brings the number of refugees rescued by the ship to 562 since September.

Mr Coveney paid tribute to all who served Ireland on UN missions.

"There is no other country on the planet that has unbroken service in terms of peace support and peacekeeping missions of a length that our little country has," he said.
