An investigation has been launched after private patient medical records from a Co Mayo hospital were found in a bin at a housing estate in Ballina.
The handwritten notes relate to a number of patients at St Joseph’s District Hospital in the town and were found by a litter warden.
HSE West has confirmed that the notes were “discarded inappropriately” and the health body has written to all patients involved and has apologized.
According to the HSE, the files were staff notes only and it has insisted there was no unauthorised access to any permanent records of patients.
The Data Commissioner has also been alerted to the incident.
Earlier this month, patient records were found in a bin outside Roscommon County Hospital.
It is understood the records were discovered by a member of the public and include details such as names, addresses and medical conditions of dozens of patients.
