Passengers swallowed 600 pellets of cannabis

Tom Brady, Security Editor

FIVE drug "swallowers" produced more than 600 pellets of cannabis resin a day after they were stopped by Customs officers at Dublin Airport.

Officers detained the five -- a British national living here and four Romanians -- after they arrived in Dublin on a flight from Madrid on Thursday afternoon.

The five were detained as a result of routine profiling of the passengers by Customs officers. Two of the suspects admitted they had swallowed cannabis pellets and all five underwent X-ray examinations.

The men were handed over to Dublin airport gardai and kept in custody overnight. By noon yesterday, they had provided a total of over 600 pellets of resin and Customs officers estimated that the final quantity of drugs would be in the region of five kilos of cannabis, with a potential street value of €60,000.
