Up to 35 passengers -- including secondary school students -- had disembarked the Bus Eireann vehicle in Co Clare yesterday before the fire broke out around 4.20pm.

The 3.45pm service from Mallow Street in Limerick to Ardnacrusha was returning to Limerick when the inferno started. Bus driver Tony O'Callaghan was the only person on board.

Bus Eireann said it would carry out an investigation.
