Parents face charges of ill-treatment

Gordon Deegan

THE parents of seven children have been charged with neglect and ill-treatment likely to cause unnecessary suffering.

The pair, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were charged in connection with the alleged neglect of the five girls and two boys between March 2001 and July 2010.

The father also faces sexual assault charges against one of his daughters.

Both defendants have addresses in Clare.

The pair are charged with having in custody or care, children which they wilfully assaulted, ill-treated, neglected and abandoned.

The charges are contrary to Section 246 of the Children's Act.

Giving evidence at Ennis District Court yesterday, Garda Roisin Ni Chathain said that the 50-year-old father of the children replied, "I can't make any sense of it".

Garda Deirdre Browne said that the 38-year-old mother made no reply when charged.

Judge Patrick Durcan remanded the two on bail to re-appear before the same court on September 12 next.
