Parents cutting back on food to fund childcare

PARENTS are struggling to pay household bills and are reducing the amount they spend on food in order to meet the high cost of childcare.

A survey of over 1,200 parents found some parents are prevented from taking up employment because of the cost of childcare. Over one-quarter of parents said they cannot pay all their bills or have reduced the amount they spend on food in order to meet childcare costs.

The survey was carried out by Barnardos, the National Women's Council of Ireland, OPEN and Start Strong to coincide with the 'Scandinavian Childcare: Making it Happen' seminar in Dublin yesterday.

Prof Tine Rostgaard of Aalborg University in Denmark, said Nordic countries' childcare services were successful because quality was prioritised.
