Fresh details emerged yesterday of the ordeal endured by Tommy Kelliher (25) after he was abducted at gunpoint from the post office his family manage in Newcastle West, Co Limerick, on Tuesday. Mr Kelliher was rescued at 4pm by gardai who found him in the boot of his father's BMW eight hours after his nightmare had begun.

His safety was secured hours earlier after a woman who works at the post office made her way to a meeting point and dropped off €105,000, while a masked man held Mr Kelliher at gunpoint in a nearby car. Gardai were continuing interviews yesterday.

It is believed the raider who held Mr Kelliher captive remained calm throughout the incident and chatted freely to his hostage. The victim was told he would not be harmed as long as everything went to plan.

The post office has reopened.
