Padraig's a gentleman and a scholar

GOLF star Padraig Harrington last night added 'Joycean scholar' to his growing list of accolades. Following in the footsteps of JK Rowling, Salman Rushdie and Roger Daltrey, he was presented with the James Joyce Award by the Literary and Historical Society at UCD.
"It's great to receive this award. I'm really chuffed. Great people have gone before me and it's made all the nicer because I'm pretty much from the locality. It's always nice to have the ego massaged," he quipped.
A smiling Padraig was none the worse from a scary experience on the flight home from a tournament in Abu Dhabi at the weekend.
The golfer endured a scare as his Etihad Airways plane took off on Monday. As the aircraft taxied along the runway preparing for take-off, the plane came to a shuddering stop after a tyre punctured.
"I just thought it was an aborted takeoff. We still don't know what really happened," he said.
