Packie gets chance to relive Cup memories
FOR former international goalkeeper, Packie Bonner, it was like a return to the playing days during the Jack Charlton era.
"It was like going back to the World Cup, spending days travelling through Europe," he told the Irish Independent.
Now the FAI's technical director, Packie was attending a UEFA conference in Florence, Italy, and was due to travel back to Ireland last Friday before the volcano intervened.
"We flew into Zurich, probably one of the last flights allowed, and then got a train to Basle and then a train to Paris," he said after walking off the ferry.
"We had no problems whatsoever and we got back fine. It was a great experience in one way but it was tough for parents with kids; I felt sorry for them."
Staff on the ferry from Cherbourg to Rosslare were "fantastic," according to the soccer legend.
"The Irish always look after each other."
