Motorists travelling eastbound on the M6 have been forced to use local roads around Athlone after the truck overturned at 12.30pm today.

The incident occurred between Ballinasloe and Athlone, between junctions 13 and 14. An emergency plan was put in place to clear fuel from the road.

A crane is currently en route to remove the bin lorry.

The National Roads Authority said the contents of the truck had been contained, and that local diversions were in place.

It is expected that the eastbound lane of the motorway will be re-opened by 8pm tonight.
