Overseas snappers keep us in the global picture

A photograph of Fanad Head beach in Donegal, by Martin Marcisovsky, has won the Photography Awards

A FRESH eye on the Irish landscape helped a Slovakian photographer take the winning image in a competition organised to help sell the country abroad.

Five of the 12 finalists in the Photography Awards are not originally from Ireland -- including the winner, Martin Marcisovsky.

Mr Marcisovsky (31), originally from Krombachy, eastern Slovakia, has been living in Dublin since 2005. The IBM employee's image of sunrise over an icy beach at Fanad Head, Co Donegal, scooped top prize.

The photograph was taken during a trip to Donegal with his girlfriend during last December's big freeze.

"I was really happy and surprised, I wasn't expect-ing it when I heard, and had actually forgotten that I had entered the competition last year," he said.

The other foreign finalists hailed from Poland, India, New Zealand and Newcastle in England. Entrants were encouraged to use John Hinde's series of famous postcards and iconic images of Ireland as inspiration.

The finalists' pictures will be reproduced as a calendar.
