OVER 700 people applied for just one receptionist job at a local swimming pool.

Eager job-hunters flooded the new leisure centre in Wexford with applications for a limited number of jobs.

Even expats applied from overseas for the key positions in the €7m Apex swimming pool and gym complex in New Ross, Co Wexford.

Apex manager Ms Enda Maria Kavanagh said that they were overwhelmed by the amount of interest in the employment opportunities.

"It took days of work to go through all the applications," she said.

"Local people who are now living in London who wanted to come home even applied."

Management were overwhelmed with applications via email and mail over the past few weeks for 13 jobs at the Apex, which is located on a ring road outside the town centre.

"I was at home at 3am going through them. I can appreciate when someone is looking for work that a lot of time goes into their applications," Ms Kavanagh said.

"I responded to everyone either through email, mail or through a phone call and I gave some feedback."

Hundreds of people applied for the other 12 jobs that were on offer at the leisure centre, which employs 21 people in total.

However, the receptionist job proved to be the most popular of all.

"Not as many applied for the lifeguard or gym attendant positions as they require more specialist training," Ms Kavanagh said.

"We have an amazing team of people now."
