'Outsider' taxis warned to stay away
THE Taxi Regulator is cracking down on rogue cab drivers who are hoping to make a killing during Galway Race Week.
Each year hundreds of taxis from outside Galway city and county flood the City of the Tribes in the hope of cleaning up on the surge in demand for transport.
Up to 300 taxi operators from outside Galway converged on the city last year, sparking uproar among local drivers. Now Taxi Regulator Kathleen Doyle has warned that only taxis licensed in Galway city and county can operate within the county boundary.
Ms Doyle confirmed that a team of enforcement officers will be in Galway carrying out checks on taxis. Gardai will be supporting the efforts.
The illegal operators can be moved on, fined or even have their vehicles impounded.
