A BARBEQUE that raged out of control sparked a major emergency operation which closed part of an Irish city centre.

Pedestrians reported smoke billowing from the roof of a three storey building near Kyle Street in Cork city centre at 3pm.

Three units of Cork fire brigade raced to the scene while Gardai closed roads leading to Kyle Street in anticipation of a possible evacuation.

Fire brigade personnel investigated the source of the smoke and discovered that it was a barbeque that had burned out of control and a family was attempting to put it out in the garden.

The smoke was being swept under the eaves of a nearby building making it appear as if it was on fire.

The barbeque was extinguished by brigade personnel and the road re-opened within 30 minutes.
