A homeless charity has extended the opening hours of its day services to ensure that people have somewhere warm to go 24 hours a day.
Focus Ireland estimates there are more than 1,000 homeless people in Dublin, with up to 100 of them sleeping rough and exposed to the full dangers of the Arctic weather.
The Coffee Shop, an advice centre in Temple Bar, will stay open until 6pm, when night shelters open; while the Extension Day Service, a drop-in centre for those aged 16 to 25 on Francis Street, will stay open from 9.30am to 5pm as the cold spell continues.
The charity warned that people exposed to prolonged periods of cold can put their health in jeopardy.
