Oops, RTE jumps the gun with early result
YOU would expect the national broadcaster to have the inside track on current events, but even RTE was ahead of itself when it published the presidential election results hours before the polls closed.
The blunder appeared on RTE's teletext service. The page revealed how Michael D Higgins had been elected as the new President of Ireland with 819,143 votes.
It also claimed that Sean Gallagher had managed to get 601,573 votes in an election turnout of just 49pc and that Gay Mitchell had been eliminated before Martin McGuinness.
A spokesperson for RTE said the incident was a mistake. "It was an error. In advance of the count the news team were testing pages," he said.
"It was random numbers. The minute the mistake was realised it was taken down."
