LESS than one in 10 staff looking after elderly people in some nursing homes has availed of the flu jab.
A survey of 159 residential units found that the average take-up among staff was 13.5pc but it ranged from 10pc to 27pc.
Health staff are urged to avail of the flu vaccine each winter because if they themselves become infected they are a risk to the people they are caring for.
Another survey of 45 HSE-run hospitals found the vaccination rate among staff ranged from 18pc to 40pc.
Overall, vaccination uptake by staff was highest among health and social care professionals at 25pc, said the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.
