One winner of €5.5m jackpot

A Lotto ticket sold in the north-west last night won the mid-week Lotto jackpot of €5,482,894. The numbers were 1, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 37. The bonus was 30. There was no top winner of Lotto Plus 1. The numbers were 1, 2, 3, 27, 40 and 42. The bonus was 23. There was also no top winner of Lotto Plus 2. The numbers were 1, 2, 11, 21, 22 and 30. The bonus was 17. The lotto jackpot next Saturday will be worth €2m.

Brothers quizzed over stabbing

TWO brothers were last night arrested on suspicion of murdering a man who was stabbed to death last week.

The pair -- both aged in their 20s -- were arrested by gardai on the outskirts of Limerick city yesterday. They were being questioned by detectives investigating the murder of Ger McMahon (43) at Lenihan Avenue, Prospect, Limerick, last Wednesday.

Bumper harvest for cereal farmers

IRISH farmers produced a bumper cereal harvest last year with yields up 13pc on 2010.

And Ireland produced the highest average wheat and second highest barley yields in the world over the last decade. Favourable weather conditions produced some of the highest yields on record, Teagasc Head of Crops Science John Spink said yesterday.

Customs raid oil laundering plant

Customs officers, backed up by gardai, last night found a massive oil laundering plant with the capacity to produce 12 million litres of contraband oil a year.

The plant, at Courtbane, Hackballscross, Co Louth, represented a potential loss to the exchequer of €6m a year. Two men were arrested.
