The accident happened on the Ballisodare slip road off the N4, just south of Sligo town at around 12.30am.

The BMW in which the three were travelling left the road and glanced off a lamp post, crashing through crash barriers before it ended up in a field.

Emergency fire and ambulance crews removed the injured from the mangled wreckage and treated them at the scene.

All three were taken to Sligo General Hospital, where the two men remained in a serious condition.

The injured woman later underwent emergency surgery in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and was described as being in a critical condition.

The three, who are from the Leitrim/Sligo area, are believed to have been on their way to Ballina when the crash occurred.
