Gardai and prison officers have taken to their bikes for the annual Great Escape Charity Cycle 2013 from Dublin to Belmullet, Co Mayo, in aid of the Capuchin Day Centre for Homeless People, writes Sam Griffin.

More than 30 cyclists, including Irish Independent journalist Paul Williams, will make the 300km trip and are expected in Belmullet this afternoon.

The Dublin centre feeds more than 1,600 people every week and has seen numbers using the service double since 2008.

Brother Kevin Crowley, organiser of the charity cycle, which is sponsored by the Castle Hotel in Dublin and Ballina Manor Hotel, said the cycle had gone "extremely well".

Donations to the Great Escape Charity Cycle can be made online at www.homeless.ie.
