Officials under pressure to repay SKILLs funds

THE Dail's spending watchdog yesterday said senior public officials who went on foreign trips funded by the controversial Skills Programme should repay the money to the State.

The €2.3m in public funds intended for the training of lower-skilled Health Service Executive (HSE) staff was instead used to pay for foreign trips between 2004 and 2009.

The Public Accounts Committee said the repayments had to be made if the public officials -- who are from the HSE, the Department of Health and the Department of Finance -- were found to have breached public sector travel guidelines.
