GARDAI are investigating an attack on an off-duty member of the force who was stabbed in the back at the weekend.

The attack happened on the Phibsborough Road in north Dublin at around 2.30am yesterday as the victim walked along the street.

The garda suffered what was described as a "minor stab injury" in the incident and was able to make his own way to the nearby Mater Hospital.

He received treatment for his injury and was well enough to be discharged later that day.

Officers from Mountjoy Garda Station are investigating the attack.

A garda spokesman confirmed that the officer was off-duty at the time of the stabbing.

"No arrests have been made as yet and gardai from Mountjoy are investigating," he added.

No description of the suspected attacker was made available last night.

Gardai declined to say where the injured garda is stationed or to give his age.
