Rugby star Paul O'Connell admits that his first sporting love was swimming.

He was reunited with his childhood swimming coach, John Dempsey, at the University of Limerick yesterday, to announce Aldi Ireland's new three-year partnership with Community Games.

Community Games celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2017, with five million children having participated.

The supermarket will provide a significant six-figure sum to become its title sponsor.

"I remember my time participating in Community Games with great affection. The community spirit and camaraderie of the Games is truly unique. It's not only about winning - the focus was on taking part and enjoying sports which led to a healthy lifestyle," O'Connell said.

"Competing from a young age in swimming, I learned the importance of preparation, determination and dedication - values I later applied on the pitch."
