O Caolain unapologetic at failure to spot banker

Fiach Kelly Political Correspondent

A SINN Fein TD who approached Taoiseach Brian Cowen as he relaxed with Sean FitzPatrick after their infamous round of golf insists he is not embarrassed that he didn't recognise the former banker.

Caoimhghin O Caolain, a former bank official and Sinn Fein's finance spokesman until 2007, was at a wedding in Druid's Glen on July 28, 2008 -- as Mr Cowen; his friend and ex-Anglo Irish Bank director Fintan Drury; and Mr Fitzpatrick, then Anglo chairman, golfed and had a meal together.

Mr O Caolain said he got word that Mr Cowen was in the hotel and asked him if he would greet the newly married couple.

"There were others certainly in the wider company. I wasn't introduced; I didn't know them.

"I was finance spokesperson up to 2007. The roles of the senior players in terms of Anglo Irish Bank, it was not at all a serious matter of public or political focus back in those years."

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said it was a "very, very good thing" Mr O Caolain didn't recognise Mr Fitzpatrick.
