THIS is what the next BMW 3-series coupe will look like – except it will be called the 4-series.

Displayed at the Detroit Motor Show in concept form, you can expect the finished article to be in showrooms here by the end of this year.

The German carmaker intends to distinguish its new creation from the 3-series saloon by making it much more of a driver's car – and calling it the 4-series, of course.

Traditionally, the 3-series Coupe has always been a firm favourite with women drivers, but the shift to more performance is apparently designed to get more men behind the wheel.

While we can expect it to be laden with technology and all the latest driver aids, BMW is saying nothing about line-up, engines or prices yet. That is because the 4-series is still at the concept stage of development and there may be more tweaking before it hits the assembly line. The current 3-series Coupe starts at around €41,800.

But even in concept form the new car has caused quite a stir since pictures of it were released in advance of its Detroit debut.

And BMW weren't the only German giant at the show. Mercedes was also showing off its wares with the 2014 E Class 400 hybrid.
