NUI Galway is set to install gender-neutral bathrooms in each building on campus in the next academic year.
“The bathrooms will be rolled out across the campus from September onwards to ensure that each main building has a bathroom that is all gender accessible,” the Students’ Union said today.
Together the Students’ Union and the university reached an agreement that gender-neutral bathrooms would create a “more inclusive campus for all students and staff”.
The new bathrooms will be open to all 17,500 students attending the university, and will offer an alternative option for people who may not be comfortable using the traditional female- and male-designated bathrooms.
Students’ Union president Phelim Kelly described the bathrooms as “a big step on the road to a more inclusive and equal campus for all”.
