A noted business author and motivational speaker has died after he was stung by a wasp.

John Butler (55), who set up Century Management and was the author of six books, died suddenly on Sunday afternoon in his garden.

After starting out his career as a teacher, he subsequently branched into publishing and consulting. He was the author of a number of titles including 'Crossing the Rubicon', which was aimed at executives trying to achieve a work-life balance.

His wife Imelda, who is also a director of the business, yesterday said he had just completed his sixth book, which was due to be released in September.

Mr Butler, from Naas in Co Kildare, had also just been at a conference in Russia and was looking forward to the new opportunities which had emerged as a result, she said.

The offices of Century Management, which are based in Newlands Cross in Dublin, were closed yesterday as a mark of respect.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Michelle and Maria, son-in-law Geoffrey, brothers Edward and Andrew and sisters Helen, Anne and Mary,

The funeral of Mr Butler, who is originally from Myshall in Co Carlow, will take place at the Church of St Brigid in Kill, Co Kildare, at 11am tomorrow with burial afterwards in St Corban's Cemetery in Naas.
