'No-swim' notifications placed on twelve north County Dublin beaches

Swimmers are advised to avoid bathing in a total of twelve beaches in north County Dublin due to a rare drop in the water quality.
Fingal County Council issued the number of ‘no-swim’ notifications at beaches across the north county following a routine water quality test at beaches including Skerries, Malahide and Balbriggan.
A spokesperson for Fingal County Council said the advisory notices are due to pump station overflow because of recent heavy rain.
“This advisory notice is rare, very rare, especially in summer months when we usually don’t have this heavy rainfall,” she told independent.ie.

“The heavy rain and flooding at the weekend had a knock-on effect on the water quality with the pump station overflowing and a lot of water running off the land.”
Fingal County Council described the advisory notices as ‘temporary’ and a ‘precautionary measure’ and confirmed that the water quality will be tested again tomorrow morning.
“It’s routine that we test the water, but this is unusual for this time of year,” the spokesperson continued.
“After the Environmental Health Officer issued the instruction, we informed the public on our website and through our social media websites Facebook and Twitter as well as emailing the councillors on our mailing list.
“We will let people know as soon as we hear the results tomorrow morning.
“The beaches have proved to be very popular in the good weather this summer and hopefully this won’t spoil it.”
Bathing water on Fingal beaches is generally classified as ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’.
The council take 11 samples of the water in total, one before and 10 during the bathing season, which is in excess of minimum requirements, according to the Bathing Water Quality Regulations 2008.
There is currently an advisory notice on the following beaches and this will be revised tomorrow morning: Balbriggan beach, Loughshinny beach, Skerries north beach, Skerries south beach, Balcarrick beach, The Brook beach, Tower Bay beach, Malahide beach, Velvet Strand beach, The Burrow beach, Claremont beach and Hampton Cove.
