The body of a 44-year-old man was found in a silver Volkswagen Passat around 9.30pm and the body of a woman aged 30 was found in a second car two hours later.

The man's body was discovered in the church car park in Cloonfad and the woman, a mother of two children, was found at the Springfield estate less than a mile away.

Gardai have said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths. Instead, the focus of their inquiry is the relationship between the two victims, which is believed to have broken down several weeks ago.

The man was orginally from Co Tipperary but had been living in the area for some time. The woman was from Co Roscommon.

The two bodies have been removed for post-mortem.

The scenes in Cloonfad have been preserved for forensic examinations and an incident room has been set up at Castlerea Garda Station.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone with information to contact gardaí at Castlerea on 094 9621630, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
