No Lotto winner

THERE was no winner of the €7.5m midweek Lotto jackpot last night. Numbers drawn were 9, 21, 24, 33, 35, 36 and the bonus number was 10. There was no winner of the €350,000 Lotto Plus One draw. The numbers drawn were 8, 11, 15, 19, 31, 32 and the bonus was 1.

There was also no winner of the €250,000 Lotto Plus Two Draw. Numbers were 13, 18, 21, 26, 31, 44 and the bonus was 4. Saturday's jackpot is nearing €8m.

Conviction appeal

A TERMINALLY ill man whose convictions for murdering two British soldiers were quashed is challenging the decision to have him stand trial again.

Brian Shivers' lawyers are seeking permission to go before the Supreme Court in London in a bid to overturn the ruling. Mr Shivers, from Magherafelt, Co Derry, has successfully appealed his conviction for the murders of Sappers Mark Quinsey (23) and Patrick Azimkar (21).

Drugs trial to proceed

THE trial of a man accused of possessing €1m worth of heroin can continue after the Special Criminal Court ruled a warrant used to search a house in which the drugs were found was issued lawfully.

Adams still the leader

GERRY ADAMS plans to cling to the Sinn Fein leadership for at least another three years, despite already being in the job for three decades.

Mr Adams is kick-starting a long-term campaign by the party to have a referendum in the North by 2020 on the creation of a united Ireland. He dismissed suggestions that he was too divisive a figure to front such a campaign.

Murder trial collapses

THE trial of a Connemara woman who denies the murd-er of her former boyfriend collapsed at the Central Crim-inal Court, but will resume before a new jury today.

Maura Thornton (31), of Inverin, Co Galway, denies the murder of Kevin Joyce (59) at Upper Salthill, Galway, on July 31, 2011. Mr Justice Barry White discharged the jury as he had been made aware one of the jurors had potentially sensitive information.

Crouch, touch, engage

Munster rugby star Denis Hurley has popped the question to his long-time girlfriend, Nessa Cotter. Denis proposed to his fashion blogger girlfriend on Sunday.

No date for the wedding has been set.
