No foul play in death of elderly woman found collapsed in fire at her Mayo home

GARDAI have ruled out foul play in the death of an elderly woman who was found collapsed in the fireplace of her home.

The 92-year-old woman was discovered in her home near Ballina, Co Mayo shortly after 10pm last night. She had fallen into a small fire in the open hearth.

Emergency services attended the scene last night. The deceased woman was taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where a post mortem was performed this morning to determine if she died from natural causes or as a result of the fall. It ruled that she had died from natural causes.

A spokesperson for the gardai confirmed that no foul play was suspected but officers had been involved in investigating how the incident occurred.

“There is nothing suspicious in the incident, there is no foul play suspected,” he added.
