Nine million cigarettes worth €4.3m seized by gardai

GARDAI have seized nine million cigarettes with a street value of €4.3m earlier today.
Detectives made the seizure at Castlebellingham, Co Louth, at 8.15am this morning
The Organised Crime Unit, the Criminal Assets Bureau and the Revenue’s Customs service worked together as part of an operation targeting the illegal importation of contraband products.
This morning, gardai and officials stopped a truck and a 4x4 vehcile at a service station on the M1 near Castlebellingham, Co Louth.
During the course of the search, approximately nine million cigarettes were seized.
The seizure has an estimated potential loss of €3.7m to revenue – and it’s street value is €4.3m
Four men, aged 36, 38, 39 and 44, were arrested at the scene and are currently being detained at garda stations in Drogheda and Dundalk.
A number of follow up searches were conducted on a number of businesses and private residences.
Investigations are continuing.
