Gardai have seized drugs worth more than €5m on the streets along with six guns and ammunition after a series of swoops on suspects in two counties.

Officers from the garda national drugs unit smashed a major trafficking gang that had links overseas.

The seizure stemmed from months of surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Five Irishmen and four eastern Europeans were detained for questioning as a result of the raids on the north and west side of Dublin and in county Meath.

Several vehicles were also seized.

The suspects are being held tonight at Finglas, Store Street, Blanchardstown, Ballymun and Clondalkin garda stations.

The haul included cannabis resin, herbal cannabis, ecstasy and probably cocaine.
