THE TintMan device measures the amount of light that travels through a window.
By law, at least 65pc of light must pass through the windscreen, front-seat passenger and driver windows.
If the percentage is less, gardai can force the motorist to have the windows replaced.
Also, by law, engines can be no louder than 99 decibels, around the same level as a lawnmower, and anything above this will result in prosecution.
With the Sound Level Meter, a microphone is placed half a metre from the exhaust pipe, the engine is revved to 3,750rpm, and the noise is measured.
Fines range from €1,000 for a first offence to €2,000 for a second or subsequent. If there are three offences in a year, a prison sentence of up to three months can be imposed.
