The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed to Independent.ie that they are providing consular assistance to the family of a man who was injured while in Bulgaria.

The incident took place on Tuesday night and a man has since been arrested.

The man is understood to have received a fractured skull during a night out in Sunny Beach, a popular resort with Irish and English tourists.

A spokesperson from Club Viking in Sunny Beach said they were aware of the situation, Irish Daily Star reports.

"The incident happened between a tourist and another who we do not know," they said.

"...it was our security that took the tourist to the ambulance to get immediate aid.

"After helping the police in their investigations by supplying CCTV footage we also know that a culprit has been arrested."

Sunny Beach is popular destination for Irish tourists, with many travelling over in recent years for the cheap prices and good weather.
