The Army Bomb Disposal Team were called to a house in Laois earlier today following the discovery of an old grenade in the back garden.

It is believed the device was still viable and had to be made safe.

The device was a Mills 36 hand grenade which was used throughout the War of Independence and World War.

Members of the Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived at the house in Stradbally at 9am this morning.

They carried out an assessment and disposed of the grenade a short distance away.

The scene was declared safe at 10:10am.
