Whale rescue fails

VALIANT attempts by a community and an inshore rescue group to save a beached whale failed in Ballyheigue, Co Kerry.

Attempts were made by members of the Ballyheigue Inshore Rescue to lift the whale back into deeper waters and although they succeeded the whale became beached again and later died.

UHG PARKING'S €2M

UNIVERSITY Hospital Galway has made over €2m from carparking fees in the last three years.

The net income from the UHG carpark was €852,702 last year. A statement from the HSE said: "Car park income is used exclusively for the provision of services at GUH."

LOWRY TRIAL POSTPONED

THE trial of former Fine Gael Minister Michael Lowry has been postponed until September.

The North Tipperary Independent TD is facing four counts in relation to allegedly filing incorrect tax returns. Mr Lowry, of Glenreigh, Holycross, is charged with three counts of knowingly filing incorrect tax returns in October 2003 and another count of the same charge in August 2007.
