Dublin South TD Olivia Mitchell broke down in tears as she addressed the Dáil for the last time today.
Ms Mitchell asked to be allowed make a brief statement as she is in Strasbourg next week at the Council of Europe and may not be back in the Chamber before the election is called.
She thanked her constituents for electing her as a TD on four occasions, saying: “I just want to say to them that there hasn’t been a single day that I’ve been in here that I haven’t been conscious of what a really great, incomparable honour it is to represent them here in our national parliament.”
A clearly emotional Ms Mitchell thanked the Ceann Comhairle and his predecessors for ““their courtesy and guidance and indeed their friendship over the years”.
And she concluded: “I want to wish all my colleagues the very best. I know that none of them, apart from the Ceann Comhairle probably, don’t know what they’ll be doing in a month’s time so I wish them the very best.”
Ms Mitchell has been a Fine Gael TD for Dublin South since 1997.
She received a round of applause for her contribution.
