Watch: Hostage situation and intercepting suspicious ship part of Garda emergency training exercise
Gardaí learned to intercept a vessel at sea and dealt with a hostage situation in today’s major emergency training exercise.
The incident was designed to test the inter-operability of Garda units, other emergency response units and Dublin port authorities and staff.
The training exercise involved an air support unit, a Garda Water unit and local units.
Garda ‘negotiators’ were tasked with ensuring the safe return of two ‘hostages’ taken on the dock by a mock suspect with a firearm.
“This shows that we can all work together at the scene of an incident,” Inspector Alan McGovern of Drogheda Garda Station said.
“This response can be used in a plane crash, a train crash, various emergency situations,” Superintendent Andrew Waters said.
“It’s a fantastic exercise for us working with other principal agencies, and in this case, Dublin port, which plays a huge part in Drogheda.”
