US vice-president Joe Biden has landed at Dublin Airport this evening as his six day visit to Ireland begins.

Having departed from Air Force Two, Mr Biden will now be driven under garda escort to Government Buildings where he is scheduled to meet Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

After a night at the American ambassador's residence in the Phoenix Park - where he will stay for most of his six-day visit -  he will meet with President Michael D Higgins at Aras an Uachtarain.

The vice-president's itinerary also includes an overnight in Mayo and a day trip to Louth as he wishes to trace his family roots in both counties.

It is understood that Mr Biden will play a round of golf with Mr Kenny in Mayo on Thursday.

Towards the end of his stay, the vice-president will return to Dublin to deliver addresses at Dublin Castle and Trinity College.
