Two young children among five hospitalised following 'serious' early morning crash

A 23-year-old man has been seriously injured following a two car crash in the early hours of the morning.

The collision between the two vehicles occurred on the R363 Brideswell to Athlone Road, Co Roscommon at around 4am on Friday morning.

The young man was the sole occupant of one of the cars involved in the crash, approximately one mile outside Brideswell.

He has been taken to Tullamore Hospital and his condition has been described as serious.

Two adults and two young children - aged two and six years old - were in the second car involved in the crash.

They were all taken to Portiuncla Hospital, Ballinasloe for treatment and their medical condition is unknown at this stage.

The R363 is closed to facilitate a forensic examination and the road will remain closed until at least lunchtime.

There are currently local diversions in place.
